I love real/fake/ PR campaigns that have a sense of humour to them...but I get the feeling that this blog is being serious. Can you even call what they do lip-syncing? In the young folks song it almost plays more like a sample than an actual whistle. Plenty of other indie bands do the same thing while playing live and not being able to replicate parts of a song concurrently... look for the ubiquitos Apple Macbook off on the side of the stage playing right along with the band... it's nothing new. If Pete Bjorn and John were trying to cover up their "lip synching" they are doing a pretty poor job because when they played on CONAN O'BRIEN on national television... he sang over the whistling too.

Sigh... I haven't researched them much, so I don't know if what you are saying is true, but I do like them. Way to go for everybody here who is just swearing and throwing flames around. I play guitar, and I admit their music isn't very complex or groundbreaking. I do think the lyrics are good and that they make up for the overall simplicity of the songs.

This is all fun stuff. They've been around for ages, being musicians, not getting much of anywhere. So they aren't the Pussy Cat Dolls.
Its an interesting idea that an 'indie' music needs to be shown up as marketed schlock, like say, those Dolls.
Maybe it makes sense. The top five selling albums here recently featured Modest Mouse and Arcade Fire.
Is the author really fighting against the mainstreaming of indie music? Maybe. Peter Bjorn and John may be as good a choice as any, maybe, but certainly not better.

Somebody sent me a link to "Young Folks" and after listening to it on loop for about an hour, i thought "wow this is genius!".. maybe it was my fever.
So i went to their myspace, liked the songs, and i noticed that they have a show in Hoboken (where i live) on the fifth, but it's sold out! *akk!*
in my misery, i proceeded to look at their live videos and discovered they're just another pretetious post-blur band capitalising on the world's obsession with bland eurocrap (i have nothing against european music, my favorite band is sigur ros).. i mean there are so many good european bands out there!

Wow! I am amazed to see that this band has created so much sparks. As I don't own a radio (as pretty much everything on it is crap) I only came across Peter Bjorn & John a few weeks ago whilst watching a documentary. After looking into it, I discovered that they were Swedish and somehow was not surprised to hear that once again the world ends up with the worse that comes out of Sweden (the Hives ?!?). Although I do like that annoying tune and the video, I must admit that the rest of the album is merely inteteresting and I totally agree that the whistling is lipsynched (as seen live on Jonathan Ross's last night, British TV) but aren't most band played on Radio lipsynched? seems all this trouble to defend the title of indie is kinda self-defeating. will people be defending the title of "indie" well after corporations have thoroughly taken it over, decreeing who's really indie and who's not by who they listen to? the punks are still trying that, and i must say it's a bit of a downhill battle.
any organization of sound that follows some kind of tempo is music, and trying to use "valid" arguments to decree one as better than the other is as useless as arguing that one color is better than the other; there is no real answer, it's all opinion. just let them do what they want, obviously there are people who hate them, and those people won't care what big shows they play, or whatever.

LET PEOPLE LIKE THE MUSIC THEY FUCKING LIKE, ALL RIGHT? God. Seriously. I don't like a lot of bands, but I don't try to stop them with reasons that make absolutely no sense whatsoever. Let them get their fame because they obviously deserve it somewhat. Granted, a lot of artists don't, but at least they get it. I'm not a jealous asshole such as yourself who tries to stop a band that you call "catchy". What the hell is that? If you're calling it catchy, I bet you have it in your head a few times or another and caught yourself whistling it a few times.
Don't be a prick. Let people like what music they like. How would you like it if someone said, "Well, you music is super catchy, but I'm pretty sure you're never allowed to get popular." In fact, I bet you're one of those pretentious assholes who thinks you love music so much that nobody is allowed to like what you like. I bet you like Peter Bjorn and John, but don't want people to know what you're talking about when you say you went to their show last week. Now, I'm not saying that you actually are a scenester music-hoarder who wants "nothing to do with the mainstream media", but after reading your blog, this is all I can sense.
